Despite that, there have been some definite fails along the way.
Due to the location of the bulkhead (long story) we are faced with an 11 inch space. Cabinets don't come in 11 inch width, which means we have to put something custom there. Rob had the great idea to build a wine-rack to fill this space. Now, lets be clear: to most people, something like building a wine-rack is a project that takes a bit of design, planning and careful craftsmanship. Yet, for whatever reason, Rob decided to build the wine rack in an hour, on his knees in the kitchen with a circular saw, since the garage was too full of, well, junk, to access the table saw. It was raining outside, and he couldn't use the table saw outside, so, rather than wait for a sunny day, he built this:
WINERACK FAIL
He gamely acknowledges the folly of this plan, and feels shame for his epic fail. Need I say, we still do not have a wine-rack for the kitchen, hee. We will have one eventually, but it will either be purchased, or built with a bit more time and care.
I was also instructed to post one of Dave's two fails as well. He was apparently supposed to make a nice straight cut on this peice of wood. The end result was neither nice, nor straight. But hey, never complain about the quality of free labour, right?
SAW FAIL:
Now, on to the things that went well. With Derek's help, all of the appliances are in place. We have left on their protective coating so that they don't get scratched while work is ongoing.
All of the cabinets, drawers and doors are in place. We still have to pick up our cabinet hardware from Lee Valley Tools.
All of this work generated a very large amount of garbage.
But, with the floor refinishers arriving tomorrow morning, all of the garbage had to be tidied up.
And, last, but not least, the ugly bannister has been removed. The new one will be installed after the floors have been refinished.
Unfortunately, the removal of the bannister resulted in the chipping of a tile. So, that one tile will have to come up and a new one put in its place. Small price to pay for being rid of the ugly bannister, no? We haven't chosen a new one yet, but we hope that Rob's Dad will be able to install it when he is here.
This week, lots of work will be going on, but thankfully not by us. The floor refinishing will begin tomorrow morning. We've chosen a darker stain, and can't wait to see how it turns out.
As well, the folks from "Planet Granite" (hee!) are coming tomorrow to measure our countertop, and sink and counter installation should take place on Friday. This makes me happier than you will ever know.
